Why Frankenstein Thrifts
I’m going to be really honest, I didn’t start off wanting to mess around with slow fashion or stop shopping fast fashion sites. I loved the “unique” clothing from places like Shein. Then I saw someone take their childhood bed sheets and turn them into a jacket. I wanted to be able to make one (because I couldn’t afford to spend that much on a coat), so I started teaching myself to sew.
Through that research and personal education, I realized how much textile waste there is. So I figured, while I am teaching myself to sew, I would use only cheap fabric from goodwill, second hand, and thrifting. I didn’t want to buy any fabric “new” to waste while I was learning. Since then I’ve just been having the best time being creative and making fun things I’ve seen online. And I can’t keep it all so I am trying to sell it so I can make room for more upcycled textiles. I feel like I’m literally breathing new life into dead pieces that would have been trash. So I made some jokes about “Frankensteining” a few pieces of clothes or a bed sheet, and here we are. Fighting fast fashion. And spending more money than I’m making to do so. Having fun creating the nostalgic silly wardrobe I always dreamed of!
